چکیده

We have determined the detection sensitivity of the LR 115 detector placed on the bottom of hemispherical diffusion chambers through Monte Carlo simulations. For the cases where the LR 115 detectors completely cover the bottom of hemispherical diffusion chambers, we propose the optimum radius of the hemispherical chamber as 3 cm. In hemispherical chambers with radii smaller than 3 cm, the total sensitivity is smaller which will lower the number of tracks and increase the statistical uncertainty. On the other hand, if the radius is larger than 3 cm, the effects of the deposition fraction of radon progeny will come into effect, which will again introduce uncertainties in radon measurements. For the hemispherical chamber with a radius of 3 cm, we further propose the detector radius to be 1.3 cm. This combination will eliminate the influence of the deposition fraction on the total sensitivity and at the same time give a large total sensitivity. For a detector with this radius, the hemispherical chamber with a radius of 3 cm is the largest one which provides the total sensitivity independent of the deposition fraction of radon progeny. 2003 Elsevier B.V. Sensitivity of LR 115 SSNTD in a diffusion chamber

Solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs), such as LR 115, have been commonly used in diffusion chambers for long-term measurements of radon gas concentrations. For the LR 115 SSNTD, it has been found that the active layer removed during chemical etching is significantly affected by the presence and amount of stirring, and thus cannot be controlled easily. However, the sensitivity of the LR ...

A further study of the (CR–LR) difference technique for retrospective radon exposure assessment

The (CR–LR) difference technique, based on the CR-39 and LR 115 detectors, for the determination of implanted Po in glass after deposition of short-lived radon progeny, was analyzed in details in this paper. The sensitivities of both detectors were calculated using the Monte Carlo method with V functions particularly derived in our previous works for the detectors used in the present experiment...

Nuclear Track Detectors

Approximately half of the human exposure to radiation is due to indoor airborne shortlived progeny (decay products) of the radon gas (Rn). To measure the airborne concentrations of radon gas and/or its progeny, Nuclear Track Detectors (NTDs) are usually employed. The NTDs register the alpha particles emitted by radon gas and its progeny in the form of tracks in the NTDs, which will become visib...

Measurements of indoor radon, thoron and their progeny in Farrukhabad city of Uttar Pradesh, India

Background: More than 50% of the total dose received by human beings from all sources of radiation (both from natural and manmade) comes from radon and its progeny which is responsible for lung cancer in many cases. Materials and Methods: In the present study, the measurements have been carried out by using twin chamber dosimeter cups with LR-115 type-II detectors. The value of track ...

A study of the polyethylene membrane used in diffusion chambers for radon gas concentration measurements

Solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs) in diffusion chambers have been routinely used for long-term measurements of radon gas concentrations. In usual practice, a filter is added across the top of the diffusion chamber to stop the progeny from entering. Thoron can also be deterred from entering the diffusion chamber by using a polyethylene (PE) membrane. However, the thickness of the PE m...
